コーネリアス・ヴァン・ティル
１８９５年にオランダに生まれ、１０才の時にアメリカに移住。家族は、インディアナ州とイリノイ州の州境で農業を営み、クリスチャン改革教会に所属。
ミシガン州のカルヴィン大学で学び、１９２１年にカルヴィン神学校に進んだ。その後、プリンストン神学校で、Ｃ・ホッジ、Ｗ・Ｂ・グリーン、Ｇ・ヴォス、Ｒ・Ｄ・ウィルソン、Ｗ・Ｐ・アームストロング、Ｊ・Ｇ・メイチェン、Ａ・Ａ・バウマンらの下で学ぶ。バウマンの援助を受けて、１９２７年プリンストン大学にて博士号取得。
ミシガン湖のほとりの小さな町の教会で牧会した後、プリンストン神学校に招聘されるが、再編問題を巡って教授会と意見を異にし、辞職。メイチェン博士とＯ・Ｔ・アリス博士の招聘により、ウェストミンスター神学校に奉職。
ウェストミンスター神学校を通じて、国内外の多くの学生に感化を与え、全国の様々な集会や学校、大学から講演者として招聘される。
プリンストン派の弁証論を退け、アムステルダム派弁証論を主張したために、改革・長老教会の伝統主義者たちから批判された。
これらの反対の中にあっても、彼の影響は日増しに強まり、ついには、アメリカのカルヴァン主義の傑出した神学者、ジャン・カルヴァンの真の後継者と見なされるようになる。
キリスト教思想の重要な側面や問題をあざやかに描き出したが、初めの頃は、彼の思想の重要性を理解する者はごく少数であった。
ラッシュドゥーニーは、彼について次のように述べている。
ヴァン・ティル及びアムステルダムの神学者の功績により、キリスト教哲学と神学は、最も偉大な発展を遂げた、と言っても過言ではあるまい。われわれは、この成果を無視することはできない。（By What Standard, Thoburn Press: Tyler TX, p. 206）
ゲイリー・ノース博士は、「ヴァン・ティルはキリスト教史の中で最大の神学者である」と述べている。
ヴァン・ティルは、ラッシュドゥーニーの個人的友人でもあった。温厚、謙遜で、回りの人々の愛情と忠誠心を集め、誰にもわけへだてなく愛情を注いだという。
